Taking Time to Reread: SLAMMED by Colleen Hoover

SLAMMED by Colleen Hoover
Publicaion Date: January 5, 2012
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Pages: 317

Synopsis

Following the unexpected death of her father, 18-year-old Layken is forced to be the rock for both her mother and younger brother. Outwardly, she appears resilient and tenacious, but inwardly, she's losing hope.

Enter Will Cooper: The attractive, 21-year-old new neighbor with an intriguing passion for slam poetry and a unique sense of humor. Within days of their introduction, Will and Layken form an intense emotional connection, leaving Layken with a renewed sense of hope.

Not long after an intense, heart-stopping first date, they are slammed to the core when a shocking revelation forces their new relationship to a sudden halt. Daily interactions become impossibly painful as they struggle to find a balance between the feelings that pull them together, and the secret that keeps them apart.

*****************************************

I first read SLAMMED in May of 2013. It is the second book that I read by Colleen Hoover. I wanted to read POINT OF RETREAT and started it a few times, but there were parts of SLAMMED that I forgot that I needed to remember so I planned to reread it, but didn't get a around to it for a couple of years. It wasn't until I was hit with a wicked case of insomnia that I finally picked it up again. In just a few nights, I was falling in love with Will and Lake all over again.

But I can't believe:
I forgot about basagna.
I forgot about "Butterfly You".
I forgot about the secondary characters - Eddie and Gavin. I love them! They desperately need their own book. I want to know their story before Lake met them.

Favorite Moment that brought on the tears:
"Lake, he didn't move on. He didn't choose this new job over you . . . he chose us over you. He wanted you to have more time with me."

^^^^This is why I love Colleen's books so much. The heartstring tug. It's real.

And how can I ever thank Colleen for including the lyrics from The Avett Brothers songs in this book? I'd never heard of them before reading SLAMMED and I had to seek out the band. I instantly became a fan and my husband is too. We saw them in concert in 2014 and 2015 and we will see them again next month.

Rereading SLAMMED didn't cure my insomnia, but it was a great way to spend those middle of the night hours AND it set me up to read POINT OF RETREAT which I've already read and NOW the stars have meaning! If you've read the book, you know what I'm talking about.

Do you reread books? Or do your ever growing TBR piles keep you from picking up some of your favorite books? I'd love to know your thoughts, so leave a comment.

Waiting on Wednesday: WORDS IN DEEP BLUE by Cath Crowley

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

WORDS IN DEEP BLUE
by Cath Crowley
Publication June 6, 2017
Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf

Years ago, Rachel had a crush on Henry Jones. The day before she moved away, she tucked a love letter into his favorite book in his family’s bookshop. She waited. But Henry never came.

Now Rachel has returned to the city—and to the bookshop—to work alongside the boy she’d rather not see, if at all possible, for the rest of her life. But Rachel needs the distraction. Her brother drowned months ago, and she can’t feel anything anymore.

As Henry and Rachel work side by side—surrounded by books, watching love stories unfold, exchanging letters between the pages—they find hope in each other. Because life may be uncontrollable, even unbearable sometimes. But it’s possible that words, and love, and second chances are enough.

Why I'm Waiting
  • I love Cath Crowley's contemporary stories
  • Bookstores and love letters and second chances
What are you waiting on this week?

Synopsis

It’s the end of summer. Just before I start senior year with my two best friends in the whole world. Dustin and Emily are everything to me. We’ve been inseparable since middle school, and when we’re together, nothing can go wrong.

But things aren’t always what they seem. Em’s turned into a drunken mess who parties too much. Dustin and I have hooked up a few times—and now he’s ready to take our relationship to the next level. Yet I’m not sure I want things to change. I’m scared if I take it any further with Dustin, our friendship will be ruined forever. Then there’s Ryan. The new guy. He’s hot. He flirts way too much. And Em has totally set her sights on him.

So when my best friend betrays me in the worst possible way, guess who’s there to help me pick up the pieces of my broken heart? Ryan. But he’s so confusing. Annoying. Sweet. Sexy. I want to trust him, yet he makes it so hard. What I really want is for everything to go back to the way it was before.

Before I found out that best friends make the worst kind of enemies.

My Thoughts

Is is ever really possible to be "Just Friends"?

Books like JUST FRIENDS are some of the reasons I continue to read YA as an adult. It is full of all of the juicy drama - a lot of the time over the top but this really happens drama - that I'm thankful that I don't have to deal with in my adult life. I tore through the pages from the beginning until the very end because this book was like candy - I couldn't get enough.

I loved reading about the friendships even when they were were falling apart and the romance or fauxmance and hot and heavy times. But most of all, I loved all of the "What are they thinking" moments. I'll say it again, I love the drama! There were so many times when I would say to the main character Liv, "Oh girl, you have to know better. Please know better."

One thing that I could completely relate to (from my own teenage experience) was the friendship betrayal and how Liv found it so difficult to not be friends with Em after everything that happened when they were completely ingrained in each others lives. I really felt for their friendship and wanted to know the circumstances that led up to the betrayal.

But JUST FRIENDS is about more than friendships and betrayals and heartache and hook-ups. We get glimpses into Liv's family life and I think that there is a bigger story just waiting to be told.

Favorite Quote:
"Adults think we're not paying attention, but we so are. They also believe we don't understand what's going on, but that's a lie they tell themselves to feel better about their decision." - Liv's thought about her parents divorce when she was eleven.

There is a lot going on that remains open ended, unexplored, and left me asking questions. Even though the story will continue with another book in the series, I think that more details could have been provided. I don't mind a cliffhanger ending (and there certainly is one), but some questions could have been answered.

JUST FRIENDS is the first book by Monica Murphy that I've read and even though I wanted more from it, it kept me entertained throughout. I can't wait to read more about Liv, Em, Ryan, Dustin, and Amanda. I loved that girl! Readers who like their books full of drama and angst will love this book.

Review: EL DIABLO by M. Robinson

EL DIABLO by M. Robinson was released on August 30th and immediately shot to the Kindle Top 100! I originally shared my review on the book's release day and I'm sharing it again as part of the MASSIVE blog tour.

"Let me tell you now, dear readers, just go ahead and give your tears to this author, because she's going to take them and when you've shed them all, she will demand even more. M. Robinson puts her characters and her readers through the wringer. And we love her for it. It's why I continue to read her stories and want more."

I was ruthless.
I was feared.
I had sacrificed. Myself. Her. Everything...
Living in a world where I was worth more dead than alive was a choice. I was a bad man, never claimed to be anything else. I’ve done things I’m not proud of. Seen things that can’t be unseen. I’ve caused pain that I can’t undo.
It was all my choice.
Every decision.
Every order.
Right and wrong never mattered.
Until her.
She was under my protection, until she became my obsession.
But who was going to save her...
From. Me. The devil himself.

Fate brought us together. Destiny destroyed us.

My Thoughts

"Don't knock in the devil's door, sweetheart, and expect him not to answer."

I can't say that I wasn't warned.

I was nervous about discovering who Alejandro Martinez really was. El Diablo. I met this character in CRAVE ME, M. Robinson's fourth book of the Good Ol' Boys series. It was difficult to read him in that story because he was so mean and unforgivable. Could I read an entire book about him? Could he be redeemed? It didn't matter - he doesn't need redemption from me, he is who he is.

AND YES, I could read about the devil and devour it all!

There were so many wait . . . what? But how? moments that kept me craving for more. I couldn't stop reading (except when I had to for, you know, real life), and I had this nervous anxiety while reading it. I wanted to know what would happen, but at the same time I didn't because it was torture - the ups and downs and love and hate and heartbreak. I'm a glutton for punishment.

I loved how the stories were intertwined and even with so much happening, and the intricate details, it all made sense.

I loved Lexi so hard. From the moment she entered the story, she was a spitfire. I wanted to give her the biggest hug and a piece of my heart. I loved her sassy mouth and her refusal to give up on love.

Let me tell you now, dear readers, just go ahead and give your tears to this author, because she's going to take them and when you've shed them all, she will demand even more. M. Robinson puts her characters and her readers through the wringer. And we love her for it. It's why I continue to read her stories and want more.

After finishing this book, you'll want you're friends to read it, so they can feel your pain and the torture of El Diablo too. They may hate you for it, but they can't say that you didn't warn them.

Go stretch again, cariño,” I ordered in a dominant tone. Nodding to the barre.
“I’m fine,” she stubbornly replied. Shaking her legs and arms out. Getting back into position, looking at me through the mirror. I cocked my head to the side, arching an eyebrow. She narrowed her eyes at me, but begrudgingly listened. I pressed play, allowing the melody to once again take over. She placed her leg on the lowest barre, making her ass stick out in my direction.
Tempting me.
She closed her eyes, needing to get lost in the music, wanting to push away all the negative thoughts, already feeling discouraged. I stood, taking off my suit jacket. Rolling up the sleeves of my collared shirt as I stepped onto the hardwood floor. I slowly came up behind her, catching her off guard.
She froze, turning around, opening her eyes. Peering up at me through her lashes. “What are you doing?”
I leaned forward against her ear, grinning. “I’m helping you stretch.” Getting down on my knees in front of her.
Her eyes dilated. The feeling of disappointment replaced with nothing but lust. She placed her arms out to the side, resting up against the barre, supporting her weight. I grabbed her ankle, lifting it up in the air, rubbing along her leg as it was fully stretched, before setting it on the lowest barre. Running my other hand up her side, easing her over toward the extended leg. She understood what I was doing, reaching for her ankle, stretching. Standing back up, bringing her arms above her head, I caressed along her leg again, casually turning her torso so her leg was still placed on the barre behind her.

Her breathing hitched as I touched her all over her lower body. My lips softly kissing the inside of her thigh to where she wanted my mouth the most.

HUNDRED PERCENT by Karen Romano Young - Guest Post and Giveaway

Sometimes I like to mix it up on the blog and feature books for younger readers. Today I am hosting author Karen Romano Young whose newest book HUNDRED PERCENT was published on August 9, 2016.

About HUNDRED PERCENT

The last year of elementary school is big for every kid. Christine Gouda faces change at every turn, starting with her own nickname—Tink—which just doesn't fit anymore. Christine navigates a year's cringingly painful trials in normalcy—uncomfortable Halloween costumes, premature sleepover parties, crushed crushes, and changing friendships. Throughout all this, Tink learns, what you call yourself, and how you do it, has a lot to do with who you are.

HUNDRED PERCENT
by Karen Romano Young
Publication Date: August 9, 2016
Publisher: Chronicle
Pages: 296

For my stop on the blog tour, Karen shares Tink's (the main character of HUNDRED PERCENT) Top Middle Grade Book Recommendations. What a fun way to get to know a character by the books she likes!

Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, and Me, Elizabeth by E.L. Konigsburg: Boring girl meets exciting though bossy friend. Two facts fascinate Tink: the fact that Elizabeth is a black girl, and the fact that both girls are free to go out, including at night, and get into trouble and adventures, and the parents are like, tra la la. It’s the sixties, and so some of the stuff is really different kid of historical, which is interesting to Tink although she’s a little embarrassed to say so.
Note from KRY: This is Rebecca Stead’s favorite E.L.K. book, which made me go back to it.  I like the lesser known (George), About the B’nai Bagels, the Mixed-Up Files, and The Saturdays. She’s pretty much my favorite person. E.L.K. Actually also RS, too.

Permanent Rose by Hilary McKay:  Sometimes you think, what if I’d been born to different parents, in a different country, with three older siblings instead of three younger?  The character in question, a truly brave girl, has the name Permanent Rose, which is a color of paint. Why couldn’t Tink’s parents have been a bit more creative? After all, her father is an artist. She looks through the colors at the local Artarama and comes up with a few corkers for her siblings: Phtalo Blue. That would do for Kitty. Pht, pht, pht. For Jessie:  Rose Madder, maybe.  Alvin could be Permanent Sap (the color of the Swamp Thing he was for Halloween). For herself:  Alizarin Crimson. Liz for short.
Note from KRY: When my Chronicle editor Taylor Norman and I found out we both loved the Casson Family books, we knew we were both in the right place.

The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman.  Because of this book, Tink is still trying to figure out who her daemon (her spirit animal) might be.  She figures it is still in flux, as it is for most of the prepuberty kids in these books.  Because of these books, Tink dreams of going to the far north.
She also thinks she should listen more to the part of her mind that is tricky and smart.
Note from KRY: Any book that creates a parallel universe gets my attention, because it forever changes the way I see the real world. My adult faves include Time and Again, by Jack Finnerty, and Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin — both New York books.  And I’m fascinated by many of the stories described in Leonard S. Marcus’s book Storied City: A Children’s Book Walking-Tour Guide to New York City (https://www.amazon.com/Storied-City-Childrens-Walking-Tour-Guide/dp/0525469249) to New York through children’s books, which includes

The Alley by Eleanor Estes.  Hundred Percent has girls at its center. There are plenty of important (or briefly important) boys, including Bushwhack, but Tink — with two sisters and a girl best friend, is girl-centered until Bushwhack comes along.  That Connie in The Alley has a best friend who’s a boy, even though other people give them a hard time about it, means something to Tink, but much more she is fascinated by the quiet life of the little Alley, somewhere in Brooklyn, and how a crime that occurs one lazy afternoon throws things into disarray.
Note from KRY:  The Alley is actually at Pratt Institute, where my brother went to school. I made part of it the setting for a book that hasn’t come out yet.

El Deafo by Cece Bell and David Lansky. Like most kids, Tink is fascinated by books about things outside their own experience — or sometimes, an experience that is in plain sight (a hearing-impaired kid at her school) but that she didn’t experience.  Stories like this one make the world larger, more interesting, like a path with footholds on a slippery mountainside. Plus El Deafo is a girl’s story told in comic form, which Tink finds pretty spectacular.
Note from KRY: So do I. I think kids need mirrors, windows, and also pictures. As in The Golden Compass, these portals open to new universes.

Karen Romano Young has written nearly two dozen books for children, and has illustrated several, including the groundbreaking graphic novel, Doodlebug (a novel in doodles) and its sequel, Stuck in the Middle (of Middle School). She lives in Connecticut.
