Spring Blog Carnival - Karaoke Booth

Welcome to the Spring Blog Carnival
Karaoke Booth

I love books and music. I love books about bands, musicians, singers - and their muses. I love them so much I'm giving away books about bands and some music!

The winner will receive a copy of Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway and a $10 i-Tunes Gift Card.

THE CHALLENGE
Imagine a character from a book you've read enters the Karaoke Booth. Tell me the song they would sing and why they chose that song. Enter by leaving a comment. Make sure to include the character's name, the title of the book they appear in and the song they would sing and why.

THE RULES

Must be 13 or older to enter
Open to US and Internationally
(if an international winner is selected, a second book will be offered in place of the i-Tunes gift card)
One entry per person
Provide an email or twitter name with your comment so I can notify you
The winner will be chosen randomly from my top 10 favorite responses
Challenge ends 5/8/11

To get you started, here's my challenge example:
When Jacob is trying to decide if he can be friends with Bella again at the beginning of Eclipse, I could imagine him scream-singing "Whataya Want from Me" at Bella. He can't decide if he wants to make up with her and is confused by their relationship because he thinks she may want more but she can't admit it to him or to herself. The playful side of Jacob, and the part of him that wants to make up with Bella, just might even sport some Adam Lambert guy-liner.

  1. If Magnus Bane from the Mortal Instruments entered a Karaoke Booth he would probably sing 'Do you wanna touch me' by Joan Jett for Alec Lightwood. Magnus is very flashy and blunt and he is obviously very into Alec. He doesn't care about others opinions. By singing this he's asking Alec for some *cough*.

This would be hilarious coz i'm sure alec would start squirming as he is shy and kinda reserved. Lol.

  2. How about if Jericho Z. Barrons from The Fever Series by Karen MArie Moning starts a bluezy jazz rendition of "I put a spell on you" by Nina Simone! Can you imagine him all sexy and, well, Jericho Barrons singing Nina Simone! It will either be very sexy or very funny!

  5. I can see Acheron, by Sherrilyn Kenyon, in the book Acheron (LOL), singing Savin' Me by Nickelback. Technically he already DID sing it in the book, but it's just SO perfect for him... it fits so well with his story, all he suffered and how he finally accepts help and 'saving' from the heroine...
    "All I need is you
    Come please I'm callin'
And oh I scream for you
    Hurry I'm fallin', I'm fallin'...
And I'll leave this life behind me
Say it if it's worth saving me"

    It's beautiful. :)

  6. This is a bit of a cheat because it is more than one character, but the little cast of improbable friends from Melina Marchetta's Saving Francesca (and companion novel The Piper's Son) always make me think of the song Birds of a Feather by The Rosenbergs. I can picture all of them dancing to it together: Francesca, Jimmy, Tom, Tara, Siobhan, and Justine.

  7. Jack Torrance, from Stephen King's The Shining, enters the karaoke booth.

He opens a bottle of spirits and gargles, readying himself for a night of fun. After all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

The music begins and Jack belts out ‘Crazy’ by Gnarls Barkley.

    I remember when, I remember
I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions have an echo in so much space
    Does that make me crazy?
    Possibly!

    What a fantastic question! =D

I'd like Mr. Rochester to sing A Girl Like You to Jane Eyre! He could do it during the house party, so that Blanche Ingram thinks it's actually about her. =P (We'd have to find him a Victorian equivalent for "protest singers" and "protest songs," though.)

When this song first came out, I thought it was really creepy and stalkerish, and didn't like it. Well, Mr. Rochester has his creepy, stalkerish side, too. It fits him! (It's also a great song to have ringing in our ears right before the novel's fortune telling scene!)

  11. Sinclair Youngblood Powers (gotta love that name) Our time misplaced hero, villain and very frustrated main character in the book Swoon by Nina Malkin would enter our Karaoke booth where he would belt out a classic song of frustration and release his pain within by singing.

  13. I see Harry Potter would, at the end of everything, at the epic fight scene in the Deathly Hallows striding out with all the people on his side signing "Uprising" by Muse.
    They will not force us

    They will stop degrading us

    They will not control us

    We will be victorious

They'd all be signing that (Harry screaming it!) against Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters!
For obvious reasons - after all Harry and his friends and family have been through, they just want victory against Voldemort.

    Great question!

  20. I imagine Rhine from "Wither" (The Chemical Garden Trilogy) by Lauren DeStefano get into the Karaoke Booth. She carefully looks at the song selections, until her eyes fall on a song that automatically transfers her back to the way she felt when she took Gabriel's hand and walked away from her husband Linden, and his controlling father Housemaster Vaughn. She knows this song is perfect, not just because it empowers her, but also because she is totally unsure of where life is taking her - but rather than shy away from the challenge of the unknown, she is ready to embrace is as long as she has her freedom!

She closes her eyes, relaxes her shoulders, opens her mouth, and these words come out...."I am unwritten, can't read my mind, I'm undefined/I'm just beginning, the pen's in my hand, ending unplanned..." (Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield).

I pick Ally Ryan from She's So Dead to Us by Kieran Scott. The song she would be singing is All Love by Ingrid Michaelson.

At the end when she is leaving him I feel like he would be screaming Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" (I know that's a girl song, but it's about heartbreak and revenge and so appropriate). I think he is so mad and confused that she doesn't understand that she broke his heart, that this is perfect.

  34. I picture Bella Swan from Twilight by Stephenie Meyer...

A devastated Bella Swan, feeling numb at the memory of Edward walking out of her life, slowly walks out of the shadows of the karaoke booth and timidly walks towards the microphone. She clears her throat as the music comes on softly. She closes her eyes and thoughts of Edward flood her mind. She quietly begins singing, with her eyes closed, and her beautiful voice seems to come from the depths of her soul (To Make You Feel My Love" by Adele)
"...I could make you happy make your dreams come true. There is nothing that I wouldn't do. Go to the ends of the earth for you. To make you feel my love..."

I think if Nora from Hush Hush entered the karaoke booth she would sing "arms" by Christina Perri to Patch, because when Christina Perri was interviewed on VH1 for the top 20 countdown she said the song was about being in love, but having that feeling of fear of getting hurt or not being good enough. i think this song perfectly narrates Nora's feelings for Patch, because she thinks she loves him, but she is scared of him at the same time and is always questioning if she is good enough. 44. Kat and Hale watch each other over a milkshake with two straws. In the background, somebody is screatching an off key rendition of a Journey ballad.

"Interesting choice," Kat says, looking around the karaoke venue. Garbrielle is standing in the corner, flirting with a stranger and the twins are hustling a few boys on the Pac Man machines.

Hale shrugs. "I figured everyone could use some down time. You know, unwind, let loose, etcetera. Oh, that reminds me-"

He pushed his chair away from the table and extended a hand to Kat. "We're up next."

As Hale half pulled have guided Kat to the brightly lit karaoke stage, the rest of their crew gathers around them until everyone is sharing two microphones and trying to see the bright blue screen.

"What are we doing?" Kat hisses, uncomfortable with so many people staring right at her.

"Letting loose." Hale winks and then nods to the DJ who pushes a button.

Crackling speakers on either side of the stage blast the opening bars to Cage the Elephant's 'Ain't No Rest For the Wicked' and Kat starts to smile.

Aha! I have the perfect one:
I can totally see Po singing "Crashed Into You" by Chris Daughtry to Katsa in Graceling.
When they met, Katsa overpowered Po, knocking him unconscious. The song goes "and then I crashed into you...could've been the death of me, but then you breathed your breath in me." Katsa is stronger than Po, and could kill him if she wanted, but they're perfect together.

I can't help it, I have another one: Breathing by Cheryl Renee Herbsman is about Savannah, a girl with asthma and the boy, Jackson, who makes her feel better, but then has to leave, making her asthma get even worse than before. I can imagine Savannah singing Taylor Swift's "Breathe" to Jackson as she begs him to come back. "I can't breathe without you, but I have to."

Meghan would be singing to Ash "You and Me Against the World" by Tynisha Keli. Here are some bits: "Everybody said leave you alone, girl he's no good for you. But they can't judge what they don't know."
"No one could ever change the way I feel. Baby it's you and me against the world. It's ride or die til the very end."
"They can hate on us if they choose. No matter what they do, it's gonna be me and you forever. The way you love me is unnatural. Like I'm the only girl who is existing in your world." (Lyrics of Tynisha Keli's song provided by AZ lyrics: http://tinyurl.com/3c2lw4g)
