To eighteen-year-old Ramsey Beyer, the transition from a high
school in small town Michigan to freshman year of college at a bustling
art school wasn't entirely easy. Like most college freshman, Ramsey
experienced an entire range of emotions through the year, from being
painfully homesick to gleefully independent - and everything in between.
And yet, overall, and in Ramsey's own words, at college she felt
"limitless . . . like I'm challenging everything I thought I knew." Little Fish artfully tells the story of that different kind of year.
My Thoughts
Little Fish is told in a series of lists and comics. In the spirit of the book, I decided to share my thoughts in a list.
- a memoir told in lists which I liked because: I like lists, made for a quick read
- enjoyed the graphics - made reading a visual experience
- expresses the anticipation and expectation of going away to college - which anyone getting to go to college or anyone who has been to college can relate to
- shares the excitement and anxiety of making new friends in a new place
- small town girl with big city dreams wants to know more about the world outside of her comfort zone
- made me think what my college experience would have been like if I had gone to a college halfway across the country
- reminded me of my own experiences of getting out on my own and making new friends beyond my best friends from high school
- great for fans of creative storytelling
- readers may be inspired to chronicle their college experience in a similar way
- makes me want to read more graphic novels
- makes me want to know more about the author and her zines!!

This sounds like an awesome book! I love how creative you were with your review! I like how the author was creative in her storytelling and this book comes out at just the right time of year. Great review, Joli!
ReplyDeleteIt really was a great book. Perfect gift for a high school graduate. Maybe I should have included that in my list. Even though the pictures were drawn and not photographs, it seemed a lot like a scrapbook.
