It's Release Day: Make It Right by Megan Erickson

Make It Right
(Bowler University #2)
by Megan Erickson
Age: NA
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publisher: William Morrow Impulse

Max Payton lives by two rules:

Size and strength win any fight, and never show weakness.

When a rash of assaults sends Bowler University for a tail spin, Max volunteers to help teach a self-defense class. One of the other instructors is the beautiful pixie-faced girl he keeps butting heads with…and who challenges everything he thought he knew.

Lea Travers avoids guys like Max - cocky jocks who assume she's fragile because of a disability caused by a childhood accident. She likes to be in control, and something about being with Max makes her feel anything but. But during the moments he lets his guard down, Lea sees a soul as broken inside as she is outside. Trusting him is a whole other problem...

When the assaults ramp up and hit close to home, Lea and Max must learn, before it’s too late, that true strength can come from vulnerability…and giving in to trust is sometimes the only way to make things right.

OF MONSTERS AND MADNESS by Jessica Verday: Author Q&A and Giveaway

Today I am hosting Jessica Verday as part of the blog tour for her new book, Of Monsters and Madness. Jessica Verday is a new-to-me author and I extremely excited to read Of Monsters and Madness which is a retelling of Edgar Allen Poe and his character Annabel Lee. I've asked Jessica about her thoughts on writing and to share a little bit about herself. Read what she has to say and then enter for a chance to win a copy of Of Monsters and Madness.

Q&A - OF MONSTERS AND MADNESS

Have you always been a writer? Did you keep a journal or write stories when you were
younger?
I’ve never been a journaler, and many of the stories I wrote when I was younger
would have beginnings but no endings. I always liked the idea of a story having
a thousand different endings, so I never wanted to tie it down to just one.
Making it a goal to finally write an ending was one of the first steps I took when
I began to write for publication.

How long do you think about a story or characters until you finally decide what you want
to write about it/them?
Great question! For me, this usually depends on the story. If the story idea is
ready it can all come together pretty quickly. But sometimes the idea and/or
characters needs more time to percolate. For example: The idea for the book
I’m working on now for after OF MONSTERS AND MADNESS came together over
the course of a weekend and was ready to be written right away. But the idea
for the book I wrote before OF MONSTERS AND MADNESS came to me in 2008 -
when I was still writing THE HOLLOW Trilogy. It took five years until it was
ready to be written. The trickiest part of it all is that I can’t always predict
which book will be a weekend idea book and which book will take years to
develop!

What is your favorite writing environment? Is it also your most productive?
My favorite writing environment is late at night when everything is quiet and it seems like the whole world is asleep. Bonus points if there’s a storm or a full moon or the wind is whipping through the trees. (The entire autumn season? Pretty much my writing heaven!) I can’t write with music on or the TV on as I start to subconsciously write whatever my ear is hearing. So I always write in silence. Since it can’t always be fall, nighttime is without a doubt my most productive time. I can spend hours during the day forcing myself to write two paragraphs, but when night falls and the hour grows late, it’s like an automatic writing switch is flipped in my brain. Then I can write pages faster than I can keep up with them.

What is the best piece of writing advice you've received?
Read broadly and read widely. Sometimes this piece of advice can be hard to
follow, especially when you’re under several different deadlines and you don’t
always have time to spend hours with someone else’s words. But it’s so important to find your way back to reading when you do get the chance. I
definitely notice when it’s been too long since I’ve picked up someone else’s
book. (I don’t like to read YA when I’m writing YA so I tend to stick to horror
and medical thrillers when I’m writing my own stuff because it’s so different
from my YA voice.)

What one piece of advice you would give to aspiring writers?
For every ten good reviews you get, that one bad one will be what you remember the most. It works that way for everyone. The key is to try to accept that this WILL happen from the beginning and to try work through it the best way you can. Just be good to yourself when it does happen. Give yourself time to get upset about it. Then find a way to forget about it and move on. I strongly recommend ice cream!

Tell me five random things about yourself.
 1) I am obsessed with antique furniture. I have a basement full of old couches and chairs and desks, and I still don’t have enough. Just the thought of faded upholstery on an antique chair makes my heart skip a beat.
2) I visit Johnny Cash’s grave every year on Christmas day and on his death day to pay my respects.
3) The first ghost I ever saw was a girl whose body was found at the bottom of a well in the house right next to the one I grew up in.
4) In middle school I discovered THE BABYSITTER’S CLUB books and loved the character of Jessi so much that I changed the spelling of my name to match hers.
5) I can’t sleep when things that get hot are plugged in while they’re not being used. (Toaster, blow dryer, phone charger, laptop, etc...) I’m afraid of spontaneous combustion!

EMBERS by Karen Ann Hopkins: Cover Reveal and Giveaway

Cover Reveal

Embers by Karen Ann Hopkins

Embers
Series: The Wings of War (book #1)
by Karen Ann Hopkins
Publication Date: October 21, 2014
430 Pages

There are descendants of angels walking among us. Ember is one of them. And she may be the only hope mankind has as the rapture approaches and evil rises.
Embers is an epic paranormal adventure about an eighteen year old girl who discovers that she's immune to fire and any other injury when she’s in a horrific car crash that kills her parents. Following a violent episode with her aunt's boyfriend, Ember flees Ohio to live with an old relative in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Ember's exuberance at escaping a bad home life soon turns to trepidation when she finds out that she's a Watcher, a descendant of angels. While Ember learns about her heritage and the powers that go along with it, she strikes up friendships with two young men who live in a frightening walled compound in the forest. Inexplicitly drawn to one of the men in particular, an impossible romance develops. But it is cut short when Ember discovers that her new friends are fighting on the opposite side of a war—one that’s been raging between two factions of Watchers for thousands of years. When the compound’s inhabitants threaten the townspeople, Ember takes action, sealing her fate in the ancient battle of good versus evil—and the grayness in between. Ember is up to the challenge, until she realizes that she isn’t only fighting for the lives of the locals and the souls of her new friends. She also might be one of the few champions who will make a stand for all of mankind as the rapture approaches and the end of days begin.
Embers is a dark and gritty YA novel that’s the first book in the series, The Wings of War.

Now Read an Excerpt from The Wings of War
“How can this be?  My hands were closer to the flame than yours, yet mine are all right, and yours are ruined.”  I was confused and weak, yet I was still trying to think rationally.  “I need to get you to a hospital.”
“My dear child, I know this is going to be difficult for you to accept.  You have been conditioned your entire life to not believe the things I’m about to tell you, but the truth is in front of you.  You can’t deny it now.”  Aunt Ila paused and wrinkled her nose as if she was in pain, but she continued to talk.
“The fire can’t harm you, because it’s inside of you.  It’s part of your essence, your soul. Of course you know that humans are made up of water, bones, tissue and organs.  And you have all those things in your body, but the fire is in there too, just hiding.  But it is in there just the same.”  She poked her bloody finger into my belly. “That’s why you weren’t injured during that horrible accident.  All the others had to try to explain it away somehow, but you knew the truth in your heart all along.  You just couldn’t face it or didn’t know how to.  You were in the fire and the only thing it did was make you stronger.  You are what you are and you can’t deny it.”
Her voice was soft, yet it boomed in my head.
In a shaky voice I asked her, “What am I?”
            “A Watcher, my dear—you are a Watcher.”
