Roanoke Author Invasion: Featured Authors and Giveaway (1)

The Roanoke Author Invasion is coming to the Star City on April 11, 2015. Thirty authors of contemporary, romance, and paranormal fiction will be in attendance. I am thrilled to be attending this event held in Southwest Virginia. To get ready for the event, I will be featuring the authors on my blog in the weeks leading up to the event through promotional posts and mini-interviews. I'm asking each author to share a little about themselves, books, and writing advice, and ending this month-long feature with a huge giveaway.

For more information about this FREE event, please visit Roanoke Author Invasion at roanokeauthorinvasion.com or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/RoanokeInvasion

Today I am featuring Liz Long, Casey Bond, and Wendy Higgins.

Liz Long

What are some of the books that made you fall in love with reading?
Harry Potter is the first one that comes to mind because it's my favorite, but I'll fully admit that I read every single Sweet Valley book I could get my hands on. Middle school, high school, college, special editions..you name it, I read it about the Wakefield twins!

What is the best piece of writing advice you ever received?
The best piece of writing I ever received is probably "write what you want to read." It helped spur me into writing my books because I know I'm not the only one out there looking for fantasy, action and mystery with just a little bit of romance.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
I tell every aspiring writer I meet to stay the course. It's easy to get down and out if you don't immediately sell a thousand books or make a bestseller list. This is a marathon, not a sprint! It takes time - in many cases, years - to get a solid footing in the author world and if you stick to it and work hard, I promise it'll work itself out. Just have patience and keep at your craft.

Tell me 3 things about yourself.
I am deathly afraid of a zombie apocalypse (I truly believe if the world were to end, it'd be with a man-eating virus. Buhhh.) I am clearly obsessed with Harry Potter (I went to Wizarding World for my honeymoon!). And I'm animal obsessed - my family raised dogs as I grew up, so I've always been around puppies and show dogs. It's probably why I like them more than most people. (Kidding! Kinda.)

What are some of the books that made you fall in love with reading?
The Twilight Saga, Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Hardy, Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice, anything by Jennifer Armentrout or Amy Bartol! Love them!

What is the best piece of writing advice you ever received?
Write what you feel like writing. Sometimes, we're pressed for our work. Readers have expectations. Publishers might have expectations. But sometimes, we need to simply write what's on our minds and hearts. It's inspired and so much better.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Do not give up. You have to have very thick skin. Not everyone loves every item at the mall. Similarly, not everyone will love every work or every word you write. Keep that in mind and keep writing. Improve your skills, work hard and don't back down.

Tell me 3 things about yourself.
I'm an only-child, but have two children. I love the smell of lavender, but hate the smell of popcorn. I read fast and often. LOL!

What are some of the books that made you fall in love with reading?
~The Harry Potter series, hands down, as far as fantasy world building and characterizations.

What is the best piece of writing advice you ever received?
~I read Stephen King's On Writing, which was about the importance of persevering despite rejections, and writing what is on your heart even if people don't respect that genre. Both points are so important.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
~Write. Just write. Nothing is wasted. Even if you don't finish a project, save it, because maybe parts of it can be used in a later story. If you're inspired, write it. And don't beat yourself up over an ugly first draft. My early drafts are horrid. The beautifying comes during many, many revisions.

Tell me 3 things about yourself.
~I've had tons of jobs in my life, including working as a flight attendant for Continental.
~I'm a home-body and introvert. My "batteries" are recharged via alone time. (Don't get me wrong, I LOVE people and I love doing events, but I am soooo exhausted afterward, lol.)
~My weaknesses are strong coffee, fried foods (SO terrible, I know), and angel food cake
