Synopsis

When Fig Coxbury buys a house on West Barrett Street, it's not because she likes the neighborhood, or even because she likes the house. It's because everything she desires is next door: The husband, the child, and the life that belongs to someone else.

My Thoughts

I've never been more excited to read a Tarryn Fisher book than I was when I first heard about her new book, Bad Mommy. This book seems to have a slightly different tone than her other books that I've read and was excited to find out where she was taking the story. Early on I told a friend that it wasn't THAT twisted . . . YET. Oh, I just didn't even know. I love how her writing is both telling and deceptive and complicated all at the same time.

I read this for my book club and am looking forward to discussing, deciphering, and reliving this story with them.

SO GOOD!!!

Synopsis

Life begins at thirty-eight for Long Island mom and writer Luna Lampanelli, when she kicks her secretly gay husband to the curb. She's got her freedom, but what she wants is love.

Luna knows she doesn’t need a man to exist, but try telling that to her heart. Against the advice of Sunny, her snarky best friend, and Jiminy, the cautioning voice in Luna’s head that just won’t shut up, Luna sets course to find a mate.

Luna speed and on-line dates her way into several short-lived, surreal relationships. There’s Ari, the humorless Israeli who refuses to assimilate – to America, and to humanity. There’s Alex, the young and handsome ex-crackhead who informs Luna he doesn’t want to be monogamous while they’re in bed. There’s Memphis, the wild-eyed sadomasochist. There’s Red, angry and crippled, who becomes the catalyst for Luna to join Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous.

But before Luna can proceed to recovery, she meets the elusive but oh so appealing Trip. He’s emotionally unavailable and has the Madonna-Whore Complex, but how can Luna (aka “whore”) let him go when she enjoys his dry wit so much, and his naked body even more?

Humorously haunting and packed with unspeakable truths, Luna Rising follows a woman's funny and heart-breaking struggle to relate with un-relatable men and an un-relatable world, and to figure out something even more un-relatable: herself.

My Thoughts

I jumped at the chance to read the adult novel LUNA RISING by Selene Castrovilla. I discovered her books when I first read MELT, the first of her Rough Romance Trilogy, and fell in love with her writing.

What I liked:

  • The "stats" on the characters as they are introduced. It was a quick way to know about a character, and I especially liked finding out  - what they read (or don't read) says a lot about a person.
  • Her friendship with Sunny - they are at similar places in their lives, but take different approaches to relationships. Their interactions add a lot of humor to the story.
  • Her relationship with her Aunt Zelda. The love between them is evident.
  • So much Chinese food - by the end of the book (or maybe even the middle) I was craving some Hot and Sour soup
I thought it was just crazy how quick Luna was to jump right into relationships. She was seeking connection and companionship, and comfort, and oftentimes confused that for love. She was starved for love. She needed it as much as she needed air.

Some of my favorites scenes are when Luna visits her chiropractor for adjustments and some enlightenment and "therapy" instead of seeing a therapist. There she gets centered and finds balace - in her body, and sometimes in her mind. I wish some of my experiences seeing my chiropractor were like hers. And like her chiropractor, I believe "Everything always works out."

Memorable Quote:
"Sometimes you have to clear your path before you can continue down it."

Luna experiences a lot of personal growth and self-realization that a lot of readers can relate to. We are always changing, always observing, always learning, and always growing. We don't always recognize when it is happening,  but when it does, it can make us feel powerful. And when Luna experiences it, she is happy with just being.

LUNA RISING is an enjoyable read - filled with humor and wit. I'm looking forward to reading more adult novels by Selene Castrovilla.

Synopsis

I once read that every warrior hoped an honorable death would find him. I always went looking for mine, but not even the Reaper wanted me.
I was trained to kill. I was trained to not ask why. To take orders and just march in line. Hooah motherf***er.
Life or death.
Ride or die.
And I’m not only talking about the military. I’m talking about the life that led me on the road to nowhere.
My life.
I fought for my brothers.
I fought for my family.
I fought for my country.
And I fought for her…

Never realizing I might die for them too.

My Thoughts

Sometimes I don't know how my tender-hearted soul can handle reading M. Robinson's books. They are intense and dramatic and I definitely have to take them in doses. I found that out that the hard way while reading the Good Ol' Boys series when I read them one right after the other. And ROAD TO NOWHERE falls in line with what I expect from a book by Robinson.

I admit, I was worried where the story would go and as I started reading it, I went looking for specific spoilers. I was afraid of what would happen to characters from the Good Ol' Boys series who are embedded in my heart.

Robinson is never scared to show the rougher sides of life.  -- Thank goodness this is a book and not what I know in real life.

Creed is rough and tough and definitely that alpha male that I only want to meet in books. His father is reminiscent of Martinez aka El Diablo. Martinez was mean as hell and Creed's father is too. And Creed is on his way to reaching their level until some chance encounters with the precocious Mia.

I loved reading Mia - her thoughts and her perspective. It brought back that feel of the Good Ol' Boys books that made me fall in love with Robinson's books. This really felt like Creed's book more than Mia's and I would love to have more of her perspective in a future book.

I couldn't get enough of Mason and Giselle and how their lives combined with Creed's- give us more of them please!!

I did have some questions about the timelines in regards to the other books, and I do wish that there wasn't such a huge age difference between Creed and Mia. The age difference is addressed, briefly, but it did make me uncomfortable. But, again, M. isn't afraid to go there. She shows that Mia is her own person, making her own decisions.

I'm looking forward to reading more of Mia and Creed's story and discovering where M. Robinson will take her readers. It's sure to be a wild ride.

I was ruthless.
I was feared.
I had sacrificed. Myself. Her. Everything...
Living in a world where I was worth more dead than alive was a choice. I was a bad man, never claimed to be anything else. I’ve done things I’m not proud of. Seen things that can’t be unseen. I’ve caused pain that I can’t undo.
It was all my choice.
Every decision.
Every order.
Right and wrong never mattered.
Until her.
She was under my protection, until she became my obsession.
But who was going to save her...
From. Me. The devil himself.

Fate brought us together. Destiny destroyed us.

My Thoughts

"Don't knock in the devil's door, sweetheart, and expect him not to answer."

I can't say that I wasn't warned.

I was nervous about discovering who Alejandro Martinez really was. El Diablo. I met this character in CRAVE ME, M. Robinson's fourth book of the Good Ol' Boys series. It was difficult to read him in that story because he was so mean and unforgivable. Could I read an entire book about him? Could he be redeemed? It didn't matter - he doesn't need redemption from me, he is who he is.

AND YES, I could read about the devil and devour it all!

There were so many wait . . .  what? But how? moments that kept me craving for more. I couldn't stop reading (except when I had to for, you know, real life), and I had this nervous anxiety while reading it. I wanted to know what would happen, but at the same time I didn't because it was torture - the ups and downs and love and hate and heartbreak. I'm a glutton for punishment.

I loved how the stories were intertwined and even with so much happening, and the intricate details, it all made sense.

I loved Lexi so hard. From the moment she entered the story, she was a spitfire. I wanted to give her the biggest hug and a piece of my heart. I loved her sassy mouth and her refusal to give up on love.

Let me tell you now, dear readers, just go ahead and give your tears to this author, because she's going to take them and when you've shed them all, she will demand even more. M. Robinson puts her characters and her readers through the wringer. And we love her for it. It's why I continue to read her stories and want more.

After finishing this book, you'll want you're friends to read it, so they can feel your pain and the torture of El Diablo too.  They may hate you for it, but they can't say that you didn't warn them.

“Go stretch again, cariño,” I ordered in a dominant tone. Nodding to the barre.
“I’m fine,” she stubbornly replied. Shaking her legs and arms out. Getting back into position, looking at me through the mirror. I cocked my head to the side, arching an eyebrow. She narrowed her eyes at me, but begrudgingly listened. I pressed play, allowing the melody to once again take over. She placed her leg on the lowest barre, making her ass stick out in my direction.
Tempting me.
She closed her eyes, needing to get lost in the music, wanting to push away all the negative thoughts, already feeling discouraged. I stood, taking off my suit jacket. Rolling up the sleeves of my collared shirt as I stepped onto the hardwood floor. I slowly came up behind her, catching her off guard.
She froze, turning around, opening her eyes. Peering up at me through her lashes. “What are you doing?”
I leaned forward against her ear, grinning. “I’m helping you stretch.” Getting down on my knees in front of her.
Her eyes dilated. The feeling of disappointment replaced with nothing but lust. She placed her arms out to the side, resting up against the barre, supporting her weight. I grabbed her ankle, lifting it up in the air, rubbing along her leg as it was fully stretched, before setting it on the lowest barre. Running my other hand up her side, easing her over toward the extended leg. She understood what I was doing, reaching for her ankle, stretching. Standing back up, bringing her arms above her head, I caressed along her leg again, casually turning her torso so her leg was still placed on the barre behind her.

Her breathing hitched as I touched her all over her lower body. My lips softly kissing the inside of her thigh to where she wanted my mouth the most.
