He’s the love of her life, but he doesn’t know it.
She’s his one moment of sacrifice in a lifetime of survival.

He was damaged and wild, but resilient.
She’s always been obedient. Now she’s restless.

Home for the summer between college and med school, Pearl Torres Frank knows two things: Boyce Wynn is the embodiment of everything she should run from, and everything she wants to run to. Rebellious and loud. Unconcerned with society’s opinion of him. Passionate. Strong. Dangerous.

And one more trait he hides from everyone but her:

Sweet.

My Thoughts

Sweet by Tammara Webber is an oh-my-goodness, I loved it, couldn't stop reading it, didn't want the book to end read. From the get-go, I loved the chemistry between Boyce and Pearl - they are best friends, protectors, antagonists/instigators, lovers, and soulmates. Their love for each other is evident on page after page. They deserve to be with the loves of their lives and this is their story of figuring it out.

It had been a while since I read Easy and Breakable and wasn't quite sure I remembered Boyce from those books. But as I continued to read, (and with some flashback scenes) all of the pieces started falling into place and then I wanted to kick myself for not remembering Boyce and then I wanted to go back and reread Breakable because I wanted to read Lucas's story again. (It's funny how that happens.)

As easy as it is to claim a book-boyfriend crush on Boyce, I am just as fond of Pearl. She's a girl with some gumption - that's the best way to describe her. She makes decisions based on her needs and wants and goes after what she thinks she deserves. I loved reading the book from her point of view and knowing what she thought about where her life was leading and how she wanted to make her way in the world.

This must be acknowledged - Tammara Webber knows how to write a love scene. Let me tell you! They are exquisite - there was tenderness, and wanting and humor. It's just the kind of intimacy that I enjoy reading. Whew!

Sweet is a book that I wish I could read it again for the first time. The love that Boyce and Pearl have for each other is what great romances are all about. Even though I can't read it again for the first time, I will reread it again for sure and not just the sweet and sexy parts.

In four years, nothing had erased or even dimmed my memories of Boyce. His kiss. His touch. The disorienting intensity of his gaze. I was a different person now, and so was he, but apparently those transformations didn’t matter to this thing I felt. For my heart, he was a grounding wire, the needle of a compass, a gravitational pull.

Excerpt:

Boyce watched me, a lit cigarette in one hand and a koozied beer in the other. We hadn’t spoken since that kiss, other than his usual juvenile quips during biology—the ones that drove Mel and Mr. Quinn insane and made Landon smirk and shake his head and had me biting the inside of my cheek to suppress my smile.

At first, I’d been confused, then disappointed, and then angry. I’d worked my way to acceptance, like when I’d known I was drowning and there was nothing I could do. He’d merely gone back to being Boyce Wynn, who did what he wanted and who he wanted. And I’d gone back to being Pearl Frank—star student, social royalty, good girl.

But I couldn’t forget that kiss. The fixed glint of his eyes across the fire said that neither could he.

He was lost and alone. Then he found her.
And the future seemed more fragile than ever.

As a child, Landon Lucas Maxfield believed his life was perfect and looked forward to a future filled with promise — until tragedy tore his family apart and made him doubt everything he ever believed.

All he wanted was to leave the past behind. When he met Jacqueline Wallace, his desire to be everything she needed came so easy…

As easy as it could be for a man who learned that the soul is breakable and that everything you hoped for could be ripped away in a heartbeat.

My Thoughts

I've just finished Breakable and I can easily say that I fell in love with Landon Lucas Maxfield all over again. It's been a while since I had read Easy, the book that introduced Lucas to me. I thought that I didn't remember much of Lucas and Jacqueline's story, but I quickly realized that I remembered it all. The intensity of their relationship, the flirting, the protectiveness Lucas felt. It flooded back to me. This book isn't just about a character who you should love, a guy who will make you swoon (which he does), but it's about a young man who, after going to the darkest depths of himself, reclaims his life.

Breakable grabbed me from the very beginning and keep me turning the pages to discover the mystery of Landon Lucas Maxfield. I got to see him from a new perspective, not just the protector role that he assumed when Jacqueline entered his life. Breakable is more than just a retelling of Easy from Lucas's perspective. We get to see him as both Landon - from years 13 to 18, and Lucas - in current day, and how both of these personas reconcile into the person he will become.

I loved reading the coming of age of Landon and his time as a teenager. It was both heartbreaking - seeing his relationship with his father fade into nothing as they dealt with (or didn't deal with) the loss of his mother, and entertaining - his friendship with Boyce, the nemesis turned best friend. There were just as many moments that I wanted to cry as there were moments that made me want to laugh. What I love most of all though was seeing that Landon/Lucas, no matter how lost he thought he was and the desire to give up and give in to his pain, he begins to find himself again.

Tammara Webber has written a stellar story when she gave us Jacqueline and Lucas. Readers can possibly find parts of themselves in these characters. They may not have experienced the tragedies that Lucas and Jacqueline deal with, but they can identify with their pain, their uncertainties, their doubt, their guilt, but also their love. I loved reading Easy, and now Breakable. This is a story that I will not soon forget.
