Review: CHASER by Kylie Scott

CHASER
A Dive Bar Novel
by Kylie Scott
Publication Date: April 17, 2018
Published by St. Martin's Griffin
Pages: 288

Synopsis

Given his well-earned bad boy reputation, Eric is having a tough time scoring.. When single Jean moves to town, she seems heaven sent by the sex gods. Only problem is, she not only wants nothing to do with him, but it turns out that she's pregnant.

Starting over in a small town, Jean is determined to turn her wild lifestyle around and be the kind of mother she always wished she'd had. Since local bar owner and all round hottie, Eric Collins, is now determined to steer clear of her pregnant self, it should be easy. When she goes into labour during a snow storm and her car slides on some ice, it's Eric who comes to the rescue.

There seems to be a bond between them now, but is it enough? And can Eric give up his manwhore ways to be the man Jean needs?

My Thoughts

I came at this book with so much enthusiasm and excitement because of how much I've enjoyed the first two books of the Dive Bar series. Kylie Scott made me a fan when I first read DIRTY and then when I read TWIST. This is a series I've come back to again and again. I even reread DIRTY right before starting CHASER just because I love it so much.

I like that CHASER is told from Eric's point of view. In DIRTY and TWIST, he's not shown in the best light and has some major growing to do. When he meets Jean, he realizes it's finally time to do just that. To slow his roll and become a friend. He begins taking life and his role in the Dive Bar more seriously and it's wonderful to experience this through his perspective.

I LOVED Jean. The women of the DIVE BAR series know what they want and don't put up with what isn't working in their lives. They certainly don't need anyone to save them and Jean is no different. She's making a new life for herself and her baby.

Together, Eric and Jean are magic. They have an easy way of being around each other - the openness in conversation and the honesty that comes from friendship. It's not super angsty and there is a slow build, and I couldn't wait for them to get together.

There are so many things I love about this book - the sense of community, the friendships, the brutal honesty, Joe's and Eric's interactions (especially with their mom), and the appearances of the other characters from the previous books and the opportunity to see that they're up to. And I need to know more about this Mal character because he sure is full of himself. I guess it's about time I picked up the Stage Dive series.

Like the other books in this series, I'm know that this is one that I will be a go-to read when I need a swoony book. Seriously I'm ready to read it again. I LOVED IT!!

Review: EL DIABLO by M. Robinson

EL DIABLO by M. Robinson was released on August 30th and immediately shot to the Kindle Top 100! I originally shared my review on the book's release day and I'm sharing it again as part of the MASSIVE blog tour.

"Let me tell you now, dear readers, just go ahead and give your tears to this author, because she's going to take them and when you've shed them all, she will demand even more. M. Robinson puts her characters and her readers through the wringer. And we love her for it. It's why I continue to read her stories and want more."

I was ruthless.
I was feared.
I had sacrificed. Myself. Her. Everything...
Living in a world where I was worth more dead than alive was a choice. I was a bad man, never claimed to be anything else. I’ve done things I’m not proud of. Seen things that can’t be unseen. I’ve caused pain that I can’t undo.
It was all my choice.
Every decision.
Every order.
Right and wrong never mattered.
Until her.
She was under my protection, until she became my obsession.
But who was going to save her...
From. Me. The devil himself.

Fate brought us together. Destiny destroyed us.

My Thoughts

"Don't knock in the devil's door, sweetheart, and expect him not to answer."

I can't say that I wasn't warned.

I was nervous about discovering who Alejandro Martinez really was. El Diablo. I met this character in CRAVE ME, M. Robinson's fourth book of the Good Ol' Boys series. It was difficult to read him in that story because he was so mean and unforgivable. Could I read an entire book about him? Could he be redeemed? It didn't matter - he doesn't need redemption from me, he is who he is.

AND YES, I could read about the devil and devour it all!

There were so many wait . . . what? But how? moments that kept me craving for more. I couldn't stop reading (except when I had to for, you know, real life), and I had this nervous anxiety while reading it. I wanted to know what would happen, but at the same time I didn't because it was torture - the ups and downs and love and hate and heartbreak. I'm a glutton for punishment.

I loved how the stories were intertwined and even with so much happening, and the intricate details, it all made sense.

I loved Lexi so hard. From the moment she entered the story, she was a spitfire. I wanted to give her the biggest hug and a piece of my heart. I loved her sassy mouth and her refusal to give up on love.

Let me tell you now, dear readers, just go ahead and give your tears to this author, because she's going to take them and when you've shed them all, she will demand even more. M. Robinson puts her characters and her readers through the wringer. And we love her for it. It's why I continue to read her stories and want more.

After finishing this book, you'll want you're friends to read it, so they can feel your pain and the torture of El Diablo too. They may hate you for it, but they can't say that you didn't warn them.

Go stretch again, cariño,” I ordered in a dominant tone. Nodding to the barre.
“I’m fine,” she stubbornly replied. Shaking her legs and arms out. Getting back into position, looking at me through the mirror. I cocked my head to the side, arching an eyebrow. She narrowed her eyes at me, but begrudgingly listened. I pressed play, allowing the melody to once again take over. She placed her leg on the lowest barre, making her ass stick out in my direction.
Tempting me.
She closed her eyes, needing to get lost in the music, wanting to push away all the negative thoughts, already feeling discouraged. I stood, taking off my suit jacket. Rolling up the sleeves of my collared shirt as I stepped onto the hardwood floor. I slowly came up behind her, catching her off guard.
She froze, turning around, opening her eyes. Peering up at me through her lashes. “What are you doing?”
I leaned forward against her ear, grinning. “I’m helping you stretch.” Getting down on my knees in front of her.
Her eyes dilated. The feeling of disappointment replaced with nothing but lust. She placed her arms out to the side, resting up against the barre, supporting her weight. I grabbed her ankle, lifting it up in the air, rubbing along her leg as it was fully stretched, before setting it on the lowest barre. Running my other hand up her side, easing her over toward the extended leg. She understood what I was doing, reaching for her ankle, stretching. Standing back up, bringing her arms above her head, I caressed along her leg again, casually turning her torso so her leg was still placed on the barre behind her.

Her breathing hitched as I touched her all over her lower body. My lips softly kissing the inside of her thigh to where she wanted my mouth the most.

from Goodreads

Did she once have a sister? Has her mother lied all these years? Why?

After a painful divorce, Maisey Lazarow returns to Fairham, the small island off the North Carolina coast where she grew up. She goes there to heal—and to help her brother, Keith, a deeply troubled man who's asked her to come home. But she refuses to stay in the family house. The last person she wants to see is the wealthy, controlling mother she escaped years ago.

Instead, she finds herself living next door to someone else she'd prefer to avoid—Rafe Romero, the wild, reckless boy to whom she lost her virginity at sixteen. He's back on the island, and to her surprise, he's raising a young daughter alone. Maisey's still attracted to him, but her heart's too broken to risk…

Then something even more disturbing happens. She discovers a box of photographs that evoke distant memories of a little girl, a child Keith remembers, too. Maisey believes the girl must've been their sister, but their mother claims there was no sister.

Maisey's convinced that child existed. So where is she now?

My Thoughts

The Secret Sister is the second book by Brenda Novak that I've read. I first discovered her books when I read This Heart of Mine of the Whiskey Creek Series. I enjoyed her style and storytelling so much that I wanted to read more. The Secret Sister is the first book of the Fairham Island series.

I was drawn to the mystery of the story the most. The family is keeping a lot of secrets, trust has been broken, and love denied. There are multiple layers of the truth covered in thicker layers of lies and everyone has seemingly remained tight-lipped. As Maisey begins to undercover the truth, she realizes she may not like what she discovers. In these moments, I really felt for Maisey because she was struggling with her broken marriage, her overbearing and controlling mother, and her troubled brother, Keith.

The relationship between Maisey and Keith is one of the most complex and complicated relationships of this story. Maisey has returned to Fairham Island because Keith needs her and has asked her to return. He is struggling with his addiction and mental illness, but isn't completely forthcoming with everything that troubles him. Maisey tries to help him as best as she can. During an emotional moment between them, she says:

"The future doesn't have to be a reflection of the past," . . . "We'll get through the coming months together. It'll be okay now that we have each other." (p. 15)

Maisey tries to stay true to her word, but Keith begins to test her resolve and he increasingly becomes more volatile as the mystery of the secret sister begins to unfold. Their relationship was another driving force of the story and was always changing.

As I said, I was intrigued by the mystery and that is what kept my turning the pages, but I LOVED reading the relationship between Maisey and Rafe. Rafe is introduced as the bad-boy with a wild past, but he is ANYTHING BUT THAT. He is kind and tender and responsible and respectable. (Well, he did have a little bit of the bad-boy still in him) I really enjoyed the romantic aspect of The Secret Sister and how the relationship was developed over the course of the book.

As a first book of a series, many characters are introduced through Maisey's encounters as she makes her way back to her hometown. One of my favorite characters was Dinah. She offered some humor to the story that had a lot of heavy moments. She's definitely someone who would have a lot of tales to tell and I hope that one of the books of the series will focus on her.

The Secret Sister is a great introduction to a new series. I enjoyed the complexity of the story, the family dynamics, and the romance. I can't wait to meet the other people of Fairham Island and find out what other secrets are being kept in this small town.

About a year ago a book titled Sneaking Candy was released. It was about a creative writing graduate student (Candice Salinas) and her erotic romance author alter-ego (Candy Sloane).

Readers fell in love with Candy and so did author Lisa Burstein.

Lisa fell so much in love SHE WROTE A BOOK as Candy Sloane.

The Reality O is Candy Sloane's first standalone debut erotic romance novel, but it may not be her last...

Fifteen Contestants, Twelve Episodes & One Chance to Rock Her World

When my best friend Allie posted about my need for an inaugural O on a prominent dating website it was meant to be a joke.

A joke she was supposed to delete.

But her post started an internet and media frenzy and, when I was offered fifty thousand dollars to star in my own reality competition show, I had no choice but to say yes.

The show was supposed to help me meet a carnal companion who could finally bring me to climax.

Unfortunately, the one person I want to win the undying allegiance of my, well, you know, can’t be in the running at all.

Now in an L.A. mansion with fifteen very persuasive contestants vying for my attention and one undeniably sexy Production Assistant secretly getting it all the word ACTION has a whole new meaning…

Author's Note: This book is about sex. There are men kissing women, women kissing women, and men kissing lady parts. It is not meant for readers under eighteen, or my mother.
You certainly don't have to read Sneaking Candy before you read The Reality O, but if you would like to it's FREE right now on all e-book platforms!
