Mini-Reviews: LAYLA, AFTER ALL, and GOOD AS GONE

A collection of mini-reviews, quick thoughts, and books worth mentioning. Check them out!

LAYLA by Colleen Hoover
Publication Date: December 8, 2020
Pages: 301
Source: Purchased
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Synopsis (link to Goodreads)

My Thoughts

I love that Colleen Hoover is taking her writing beyond contemporary romance into these new and unexpected places especially with this paranormal romance.

This book scared me and freaked me out way too many times. There were moments when I could feel the change in my breathing and my raised shoulders from fear and anticipation.

And even though I picked up on the paranormal reasoning fairly early on, not because it was easy to figure it out, but I HAD TO figure it out, it still had the intended effect of messing with my mind.

I loved it!

AFTER ALL by Heidi McLaughlin
Publication Date: March 24, 2020
Pages: 334
Source: Author Gift | Purchased Copy
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Synopsis (link to Goodreads)

My Thoughts

I was more than ready to get swept away in the first book of Heidi McLaughlin's new Cape Harbor series. I really enjoyed this contemporary romance that has it all - forced proximity, enemies to lovers, and second chances. And the small town setting is always a favorite - especially when it's set at the beach!

I loved this story filled with secrets and regrets and family and friendship. It was great to meet all of the people of Cape Harbor and discovering the importance of their relationships and how their lives are intertwined. I'm excited to read the next book, Until Then, and hope that there's more to come.

GOOD AS GONE by Amy Gentry
Publication Date: July 26, 2016
Pages: 273
Source: Kindle Unlimited
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Synopsis (link to Goodreads)

My Thoughts

About a year ago, I learned about GOOD AS GONE from another reader on Instagram (I can't remember which one) and I added it to my TBR list. I decided to listening to the audiobook and once I started, I didn't want to stop. I immediate was caught up in this mystery and loved that when I thought I knew what was going on I realized I didn't. The constant switching of perspectives enhanced the telling of this story of a young woman who returns home years after being abducted.

I enjoyed reading the family dynamics but was heartbroken for Julie in all that she suffered in the years that she was missing. In the midst of reading, I shared this title with my book club becasue I know that it was something that they would really want to read. Readers who like mystery and suspence and family drama will want to read GOOD AS GONE.

Review and Excerpt: VERITY by Colleen Hoover

VERITY
by Colleen Hoover
Publication Date: December 7, 2018
Genre: Romantic Suspense; 250 pages

"Sublimely creepy with a true Hoover pulse. I've been waiting on a thriller like this for years." Tarryn Fisher, New York Times bestselling author

Verity, an all-new romantic thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover, is available now!

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity's notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn't expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity likely didn't intend for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity's recollection of the night their family was forever altered.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen's feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife's words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

MY THOUGHTS

Colleen Hoover has masterfully crafted a mind-boggling story. I loved trying to decifer the clues of what really happened with this family. I had so many theories and was sure that I had "figured it all out" several times - only to be surprised until the end. That is one of my favorites part about reading suspenseful books.

I hope that she continues to write more in the genre because she does it so well. Another impressive novel from Colleen Hoover.

EXCERPT

“What are you wearing?” Corey is staring down at my shirt, perplexed, just now noticing it despite having spent the last fifteen minutes with me.

I look down at my oversized shirt. For a moment, I forgot how ridiculous I look. “I spilled coffee on my other shirt this morning and had to change.”

“Whose shirt is that?”

I shrug. “Probably yours. It was in my closet.”

“You left your house in that? There wasn’t something else you could have worn?”

“It doesn’t look high fashion?” I’m being sarcastic, but he doesn’t catch it.

He makes a face. “No. Is it supposed to?”

Such an ass. But he’s good in bed, like most assholes.

I’m actually relieved when the conference room door opens and a woman walks in. She’s followed, almost comically, by an older man walking so closely behind her, he bumps into the back of her when she stops.

“Goddammit, Barron,” I hear her mumble.

I almost smile at the idea of Goddammit Barron actually being his name.

Jeremy enters last. He gives me a small nod that goes unnoticed by everyone else.

The woman is dressed more appropriately than I am on my best day, with short black hair and lipstick so red, it’s a little jarring at nine thirty in the morning. She seems to be the one in charge as she reaches for Corey’s hand, and then mine, while Goddammit Barron looks on. “Amanda Thomas,” she says. “I’m an editor with Pantem Press. This is Barron Stephens, our lawyer, and Jeremy Crawford, our client.”

Jeremy and I shake hands, and he does a good job of pretending we didn’t share an extremely bizarre morning. He quietly takes the seat across from me. I try not to look at him, but it’s the only place my eyes seem to want to travel. I have no idea why I’m more curious about him than I am about this meeting.

Amanda pulls folders out of her briefcase and slides them in front of Corey and me.

“Thank you for meeting with us,” she says. “We don’t want to waste your time, so I’ll cut right to the chase. One of our authors is unable to fulfill a contract due to medical reasons, and we’re in search of a writer with experience in the same genre who may be interested in completing the three remaining books in her series.”

I glance at Jeremy, but his stoic expression doesn’t hint at his role in this meeting.

“Who is the author?” Corey asks.

“We’re happy to go over the details and terms with you, but we do ask that you sign the non-disclosure agreement. We would like to keep our author’s current situation out of the media.”

“Of course,” Corey says.

I acquiesce, but I say nothing as we both look over the forms and then sign them. Corey slides them back to Amanda.

“Her name is Verity Crawford,” she says. “I’m sure you’re familiar with her work.”

Corey stiffens as soon as they mention Verity’s name. Of course we’re familiar with her work. Everyone is. I hazard a glance in Jeremy’s direction. Is Verity his wife? They share a last name. He said downstairs that his wife is a writer. But why would he be in a meeting about her? A meeting she isn’t even here for?

“We’re familiar with the name,” Corey says, holding his cards close.

“Verity has a very successful series we would hate to see go unfinished,” Amanda continues. “Our goal is to bring in a writer who is willing to step in, finish the series, complete the book tours, press releases, and whatever else is normally required of Verity. We plan to put out a press release introducing the new co-writer while also preserving as much of Verity’s privacy as possible.”

Review: ALL YOUR PERFECTS by Colleen Hoover

ALL YOUR PERFECTS
by Colleen Hoover
Publication Date: July 17, 2018
Published by Atria Books
Pages: 306
Source: Purchased
Purchase Amazon | B&N | Indiebound

Synopsis

Colleen Hoover delivers a tour de force novel about a troubled marriage and the one old forgotten promise that might be able to save it.

Quinn and Graham’s perfect love is threatened by their imperfect marriage. The memories, mistakes, and secrets that they have built up over the years are now tearing them apart. The one thing that could save them might also be the very thing that pushes their marriage beyond the point of repair.

All Your Perfects is a profound novel about a damaged couple whose potential future hinges on promises made in the past. This is a heartbreaking page-turner that asks: Can a resounding love with a perfect beginning survive a lifetime between two imperfect people?

My Thoughts

It always amazes me when Colleen gives me (and all her readers) the book that I need right when I need it. There is an unbearable amount of love and pain in this story. Oh how I feel for Quinn and Graham. This story brings so many emotions to the surface about marriage, communicating, loss, forgiveness, and love. Always love.

Even with all of the tears I cried when I read this book, and the tears that came when I shared this story with my husband, I loved this book.

All Your Perfects is another favorite.

Review: WITHOUT MERIT by Colleen Hoover

WITHOUT MERIT
by Colleen Hoover
Publication Date: October 3, 2017
Published by Atria Books
Pages: 384
Source: Purchased

Synopsis

Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing it deserves is forgiveness.

The Voss family is anything but normal. They live in a repurposed church, newly baptized Dollar Voss. The once cancer-stricken mother lives in the basement, the father is married to the mother’s former nurse, the little half-brother isn’t allowed to do or eat anything fun, and the eldest siblings are irritatingly perfect. Then, there’s Merit.

Merit Voss collects trophies she hasn’t earned and secrets her family forces her to keep. While browsing the local antiques shop for her next trophy, she finds Sagan. His wit and unapologetic idealism disarm and spark renewed life into her—until she discovers that he’s completely unavailable. Merit retreats deeper into herself, watching her family from the sidelines when she learns a secret that no trophy in the world can fix.

Fed up with the lies, Merit decides to shatter the happy family illusion that she’s never been a part of before leaving them behind for good. When her escape plan fails, Merit is forced to deal with the staggering consequences of telling the truth and losing the one boy she loves.

My Thoughts

Two chapters. Two chapters - that's all she needs. And if I'm honest, she didn't need the two complete chapters to draw me in. Colleen Hoover has set the stage for a hurt your heart, then heal your heart story. I like the tone of WITHOUT MERIT and that she's written a story with younger characters in a complicated family.
Merit and Sagan story is one of friendship and confusion. But this book isn't just about them, it's not the romance that most readers expect in a book by Colleen Hoover.  It's about the people in Dollar Voss, a family, and their roles within the family.

Favorite Quotes:

"Your anger is valid, Merit."

"Maybe that's the root of a lot of family issues. It isn't actually the issues people are hung up about for so long. It's that no one has the courage to take the first step in talking about the issues."

This story about family and forgiveness and understanding really spoke to me. It's a perfect example of another book that is exactly what I needed when I read it.

Without Merit is a really special book. Definitely another favorite.

Mini-Reviews: Too Late, It Ends with Us, and Say You'll Stay

A collection of mini-reviews, quick thoughts, and books worth mentioning. Check them out!

TOO LATE by C. Hoover
Publication Date: November 13, 2016
Pages: 395
Source: Purchased
Rating: 4 of 5

My Thoughts

It seems silly to say that I'm afraid to read a book, but that is exactly how I felt before I read Too Late. From reading some reviews and some reader friends comments, I knew that there were some hateful ass, despicable, dangerous characters that were going to enrage me, and there definitely are. But that is also the draw of this book. Strange, but true. And there is a love story in there too. I just had to experience all of the fear and pain and heartbreak to get to it. I'm going to need a nice, sweet, and fun book to read next to recover from this.

IT ENDS WITH US by Colleen Hoover
Publication Date: August 2, 2016
Pages: 367
Source: Purchased
Rating: 5 of 5
Synopsis

My Thoughts
So good, like I knew it would be. And I cried, just like I expected I would and why I held off reading it for over 2 months. I wasn't ready for the emotions and this book made me feel many. I'm just glad that I don't have to worry about avoiding spoilers anymore.

SAY YOU'LL STAY by Corinne Michaels
Publication Date: June 20, 2016
Pages: 320
Source: Purchased
Rating: 4.5 of 5
Synopsis

My Thoughts
I love a great small town story and second chances at love so when SAY YOU'LL STAY was selected by my book club, I was all for it. This book was on my wishlist and one that I would get to eventually, but it was nice to read with my friends. SAY YOU'LL STAY reminded me a little of the movie Sweet Home Alabama - which I love. And the mentions of Dawson's Creek and a shout out to Pacey was just a little bit of icing on top.

I'm not going to lie, I was overwhelmed with sadness in the first few chapters. Presley experiences the depths of sorrow and was in shock of the reality that was her life.
But it wasn't all sadness. Presley works to find her way through it. I loved Wyatt and her close friendship with him. There was so much love between them. And he doesn't hold back. And Zach. And this favorite quote: "That's the thing about young love in  a small town -- it never dies."
I'm excited to read the next book in this series!

Review: NOVEMBER 9 by Colleen Hoover

NOVEMBER 9
by Colleen Hoover
Publication Date: November 10, 2015
Published by Atria Books
Pages: 310
Source: Gift

Synopsis

Beloved #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover returns with an unforgettable love story between a writer and his unexpected muse.

Fallon meets Ben, an aspiring novelist, the day before her scheduled cross-country move. Their untimely attraction leads them to spend Fallon’s last day in L.A. together, and her eventful life becomes the creative inspiration Ben has always sought for his novel. Over time and amidst the various relationships and tribulations of their own separate lives, they continue to meet on the same date every year. Until one day Fallon becomes unsure if Ben has been telling her the truth or fabricating a perfect reality for the sake of the ultimate plot twist.

My Thoughts

My experience reading NOVEMBER 9 is proof that I should never start a Colleen Hoover book right at bedtime, especially when my bedtime is around midnight. I started it knowing I wouldn’t be able to stop, but I thought exhaustion would overtake me. Nope, that didn’t happen. Instead I ended up reading through the night. At 6 a.m., I finally forced myself to put it down even though I didn’t really want to. My inability to put this book down and the desire to continue reading says volumes about Colleen’s writing and storytelling.

What I liked:
  • Ben The Writer - the nicknames they had for each other
  • Fallon The Transient - see above
  • The romance book cliche moments and how they point them out while in those moments
  • The non-alpha male Ben, who unexpectedly had a totally hot ALPHA moment
  • All that there is to love about romance books, and Fallon’s love for them. “I enjoy reading books like that because it’s not at all the life I lead. It’s completely different than any situation I’ll ever be in, thank God.” (loc: 1302). I’m pretty sure I said these exact words about a book that I read recently. I loved it, but THANK GOODNESS it is not my life.

A Favorite Quote:
“. . . comfort can sometimes be a crutch when figuring out your life.” (loc: 948).

I love how the Dylan Thomas quotes are used throughout. I read some of his work in college and held on to his books since then (12+ years) in hopes of reading them again. After finishing NOVEMBER 9, I plan to do just that.

Like all of Colleen’s books, NOVEMBER 9 is filled with love and heartache and lessons, but it’s always the love that is felt the most.

I read NOVEMBER 9 on January 1, and I can’t think of a better way to start the New Year.
